At the close of Day 3 in the Mandaluyong Mayor’s Cup, 24 players are left – eight still undefeated and 16 still fighting in the losers’ bracket – to contend for the top prize of $10,000. Thorsten Hohmann, Marlon Manalo, Antonio Gabica and two Japanese standouts – Keniji Taguchi and Tomoo Takano – lead the parade of players in the winners’ bracket. But most notable among the undefeated was Jerico Banares, 2008 Filipino junior pool champion, who notched his third straight victory yesterday. He beat a formidable foe in Chung Chien-Te of Taiwan, 9-5. Hohmann had an easy win over Gerry Watson, 9-4. Manalo prevailed over Gerald Carbonera, 9-4. Gabica took down the hitherto undefeated Courtney Symons of England, 9-4. Showing good form, Taguchi and Takano won in impressive fashion. Taguchi beat giant killer Alexius Nobleza, 9-6. Takano, for his part, whitewashed Raymond Faraon, 9-5. Not as fortunate was their compatriot and Japanese No. 1 Satoshi Kawabata. Allan Soliman beat Kawabata in surprising fashion, 9-5. Also still undefeated is Mario Tolentino, who continued his winning romp after beating Johnny Archer the other night. Tolentino defeated Bernard Flores handily, 9-5, in the last match of the evening. Meanwhile, from the losers’ bracket, several top players made their way back to contention. Archer bounced back by winning two matches yesterday, first against Bernard Lopez de Leon, 9-7; and then against Michelangelo Mengorio, 9-5. Another veteran still in contention is Edgar Acaba, former president of the Philippine Cue Artists Association. He beat Silverio Tulabing and Ace Tadigue by identical scores, 9-7.
